REAL MADRID want Cristiano Ronaldo to join Manchester United in negotiations that could see David De Gea move to the Bernabeu, according to reports.

Manchester United are set to face another fight to keep De Gea with Real Madrid expected to come calling at the end of the season.

Los Blancos want the Spain international as a replacement for Keylor Navas and their failure to land Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga last month has opened the door to a summer switch.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has been regularly linked with a return to Old Trafford ever since he turned his back on the club back in 2009.

And Spanish outlet Don Balon claims Real Madrid are ready to include him in any proposal to land De Gea, in a transfer that could sent shockwaves around the football world.

United are set to demand a huge fee to let their star asset go.

De Gea’s current contract expires in 2019 but the club have the option of automatically extending it by a further year.

As a result, the Red Devils are under no obligation to sell the goalkeeper, who made his 300th appearance for the club in their 2-0 win over Huddersfield this afternoon.

Yet Don Balon say they are hopeful that using Ronaldo as bait may pull off.

Even though the club have recently landed Alexis Sanchez, there is always a clamour for the Premier League giants to land the biggest and best names in world football.

With Ronaldo, the case is even more unique.

United CEO Ed Woodward has long dreamed of bringing the Portugal international back to the club, where his popularity remains high among the supporters.

His marketability also appeals to the club, with any Ronaldo return sure to generation millions in shirt sales and merchandise alone.

However, United are wary of bringing the player back due to the salary he would demand.

And that means Real may have to rethink their plans to bring De Gea to the Bernabeu.
