JOSE MOURINHO has been thanked for sending a heart-warming personal letter to a 94-year-old fan who is recovering from a stroke.

Fredrick Schofield, a lifetime supporter of Manchester United, received the letter in hospital after his grandson - a Manchester City fan - got in touch with the club.

Mourinho is famed for his combative persona, but penned a touching note to the fan that shows he does have a caring side.

He wrote: "We have recently been advised about all your wonderful dedication to Manchester United.

"I just wanted to write to you to thank you for your loyal support and devotion to the club. The enthusiasm of the fans continues to astound me.

"I understand that you have had a difficult time recently, but hope that it helps to know that myself, the players and the staff are all thinking of you."

Fredrick is said to have met Manchester United players at the Arsenal game a week before the Munich air disaster in February 1958.

His daughter, Linda, revealed that he still gets upset about the disaster, where eight players and three Manchester United staff were among 23 dead, "to this day"

Fredrick's grandson Kieran arranged the note, even though he supports bitter rivals Man City.

Posting a picture on social media he revealed his grandad was "made up" by the gesture.

"My grandad was made up with it, I'm a City fan however credit where credits due," said Kieran,

"When I contacted them I didn't expect this, United exceeded my expectations here.

"Football passion in our city is amazing, divides us but can unify us when needed."

Linda also added a picture of Fredrick smiling and wrote: "Thank you son for getting your grandad this today.

"He's depressed after his stroke. Respect for football, Kieran's an avid [Man City] fan but he knows his grandad is [Manchester United].

"Thank you for making his day. Respect."

Some fans expressed surprise when Mourinho was spotted surrounded by kids ahead of the win over Yeovil Town.

Before kick-off, the Portuguese boss stopped and talked to a number of ballboys and mascots at Huish Park.

Jose Mourinho and his players travel to Wembley to face Tottenham on Wednesday - United have won all five of their games in 2018, scoring 12 goals and conceding none.
