Cristiano Ronaldo: I want to stay at Real Madrid, I love this club

After picking up an award that recognises him as the Best Football Player of the Year for a Chinese publication, Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo gave an in-depth interview and made it clear that his intention, as of this moment, is to continue at Real Madrid.

Speculation had intensified recently that the Portuguese had wanted to leave the club but the striker put paid to that notion.

"Of course, I want to stay here [at Real Madrid]," he said to Dongqiudi.

"I have lived in this city since 2009 and I love the weather and the people.

"It's close to Portugal which can be reached by car.

"Spain is a great country, I love it and I love this club."

Though he'll not give up until it's mathematically impossible, Ronaldo did admit that catching Barcelona at the LaLiga summit would be difficult.

"Real will never give up," he continued.

"But it will be very, very, very difficult.

"We are very, very disappointed with the current situation but, as I said before, it's still early.

"Perhaps, if we win the Champions League at the end of the season, it will be said: 'Incredible season , you won the Champions League.'"

Asked about his recent facial injury, the striker remained unconcerned.

"I'm still happy, I'm still handsome and the vision remains as clear as before, so there's no problem," he noted.

Now tied with Lionel Messi on five Ballon d'Or's, it seems unlikely that he will manage a sixth after such a poor start to the 2017/18 season.

"To be honest, I never thought I could win a Ballon d'Or or two, and much less five," he noted.

"So if I don't win any more in the future, I will continue feeling very, very, very proud of myself.

"Of course, my ambition is to win more individual trophies and with the team, but I will not be obsessed with the Ballon d'Or.

"It's good that I have shared this honour and award with Messi, a great player, in recent years."

Portugal aren't favourites to win the World Cup in the summer but that won't stop the player believing that it's possible.

"I said that my dream is to win some important titles for the Portuguese team and in 2016 we won the European Championship," he said.

"If you ask me if I want to win, of course I will say yes.

"Portugal aren't the favourites but that's good for us."

Finally, Ronaldo was asked to clarify when he was going to hang up his boots.

"My plan to retire at 41 is likely to be harder to achieve, so now I value the present moment," he concluded.
