And he was left with a black left eye and stitches as a lasting reminder of the injury.

Ronaldo was injured as he scored during his side's 7-1 rout of  La Coruna at the Bernabeu.

He suffered a boot in the face from Deportivo defender Fabian Schar as he netted his second — and Real's sixth.

As he was led from the pitch, a furious Ronaldo grabbed a phone from a club doctor to view the damage before shaking his head in disgust.

He did not return but Deportivo were the victims of the serious damage as Gareth Bale and Nacho also netted twice, with Luka Modric getting in on the act.

Zinedine Zidane's side actually fell behind when Adrian Lopez tapped in a cross from Arsenal flop Lucas Perez.

Nacho levelled before Bale put Real ahead with a brilliant curling strike that clipped a post.

The Welshman then headed in a Toni Kroos corner, with Ronaldo teeing up Modric for number four.

Ronaldo swept in Casemiro's cross for his first but was left bloodied as he doubled his tally before Nacho struck again.

The Portuguese may get the night off at the Bernabeu tomorrow with Real 1-0 up from their first leg.
