Cardiff boss Neil Warnock disappointed with point at Hillsborough

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock was disappointed to only take home a point after seeing his side held to a goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

Both sides had decent sights of goal at Hillsborough, with Wednesday strikers Jordan Rhodes and Lucas Joao both spurning opportunities and Yanic Wildschut and Marko Grujic going close for the visitors.

Warnock said: “I think any draw away from home is a good point but I’m a bit disappointed because I thought it was a good opportunity to get three points.

“We couldn’t find that edge in the final third. There was a little bit of quality lacking and nothing really dropped for us.

“You’d have thought that we were the home side because they were looking to get us on the counter-attack.

“We’ve had 12 clean sheets this season, which is brilliant. I’m really pleased with that.

“We’ve spoken about three or four strikers and I’m hoping to get one of them before the next league game. We’ve got to be a bit better at the finishing.”

Warnock felt particularly aggrieved that Kenneth Zohore’s 13th-minute effort was ruled out for an apparent foul on debutant Jordan Thorniley.

The Bluebirds boss said: “That’s never a foul in a million years. In the olden days, they wouldn’t have even thought about that being a foul!”

Wildschut had a shot deflected over the bar for the visitors and then saw a first-time effort saved by Joe Wildsmith after being found in space on the left-hand side of the area by Junior Hoilett.

Grujic fired in a 25-yard shot which was well saved by Wildsmith, who pushed the ball wide.

Rhodes then had a decent chance to put Wednesday ahead, heading over from a David Jones free-kick.

Then Joao slipped a delightful ball through to Rhodes, whose shot was kept out by keeper Neil Etheridge and Adam Reach, following up, failed to hit the target.

Joao dragged his shot wide after Rhodes played the ball through to him inside the area and then put a header straight at Etheridge from a Rhodes cross.

Wildschut went close with a shot on the turn from the edge of the area, the ball going a fraction wide of Wildsmith’s left-hand post.

The result left Wednesday with just one victory from their last 12 Sky Bet Championship games.

Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay, overseeing his first home league match, said: “It was a very hard game. Cardiff had a good team with strong, physical players. They were also dangerous.

“I think in the first half we had problems controlling the game but we did not give a lot of chances away.

“Cardiff in the first half had two or three chances but at the end of the first half we had two good chances to score.

“In the second half, we had two or three very good chances to score.

“The defending over 90 minutes was stable. We have good work in the defending.

“I’ve seen my team in a third game and I can live with my team. We are working intensively every day and we have made steps.”
