The Liverpool wingers had both been nominated for the 2017 prize for best African footballer, and were hoping to follow in the footsteps of Leicester ace Riyad Mahrez who claimed the 2016 crown.

And it was Egyptian star Salah who claimed the top prize, pipping Mane and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the award.

Salah has been phenomenal since arriving from Roma in the summer, and is currently the Premier League's second highest scorer after Harry Kane.

He also scored the goal that sent Egypt to their first World Cup since 1990.

Mane also enjoyed a great 2017 at club level, shining as the Reds qualified for the Champions League with their first top four finish in three years.

The former Southampton man also played a major role in Senegal reaching only their second ever World Cup.

However, Reds fans will have noticed that the ceremony is not at the best time for the club, with the FA Cup third round showdown with Everton taking place tomorrow evening.

Salah has been ruled out injured from that game, but Mane is still in contention to feature, and the duo are set to fly back later tonight on a private jet.
