Bayern Munich have been keeping tabs on Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
Liverpool’s £75m swoop for Southampton star Virgil van Dijk is proof the Anfield board are willing to back their manager in the transfer market.
And that spells bad news for Bayern’s long-running pursuit of Klopp.
The German coach, 50, has been on the radar of the Bundesliga leaders for well over a year – as was first revealed in the Daily Star Sunday back in October 2016.
Only a few weeks ago Bayern felt they were getting closer to realising that aim amid growing doubts about Liverpool’s progress under Klopp.
But that was before the Reds flexed their financial muscle last week to secure Van Dijk in a world record deal for a defender.
The move for the Dutchman, which will be completed once the January window opens, is a huge statement of intent from the Merseysiders.
And it indicates that the club’s American owners still have faith that Klopp, in his third year at the helm, is the right man to bring back Liverpool’s glory days.
Jupp Heynckes is expected to step down at Bayern at the end of the season
Those close to Bayern now accept that the club will have to search elsewhere to find a new top coach.
A source said: “The Van Dijk transfer says Klopp is unlikely to be available – or looking to leave Liverpool – any time soon.”
Bayern sacked Carlo Ancelotti in October and appointed veteran coach Jupp Heynckes, 72, for a fourth time.
Bayern went into the winter break 11 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga but Heynckes still plans to step down in May.
