Sound the alarms: Isco, injured, almost ruled out for Russia

Alarm bells were set off in Madrid on Saturday evening as Isco suffered an injury to his left thigh in Spain's friendly with Costa Rica.

A challenge made by Kendall Waston left the Real Madrid playmaker on the pitch and in a significant degree of discomfort.

It then became clear that the issue was located in the former Malaga midfielder's left thigh as he signalled to the bench that he needed to be substituted, despite having attempted to run the pain off.

Julen Lopetegui was left in no doubt that the pain had to be serious for the 25-year-old to ask to come off, such is his desire to play every single minute of every match for both club and country.

Real's hierarchy will now cross their fingers in the hope of avoiding yet another injury, as it was only on Friday that it emerged Gareth Bale had suffered yet another calf problem, likely to keep him on the sidelines for a further month.

Isco is even more important as he has been Los Blancos most consistent player this term.

As those around him have faltered, the Spaniard has been able to drag his team forward on numerous occasions.

Fortunately for Los Blancos, there was a suggestion after the full-time whistle at the Estadio La Rosaleda that the injury is only a knock.

A forceful knock, to be sure, but after initial observations, it is anticipated that there will be any longer-term problems.

Further medical tests will be taken on Sunday and his participation in the friendly against Russia is in doubt.
