Substitute Scott Vernon seals Grimsby win

Posted Sunday, September 17, 2017 by PA

A late header from substitute Scott Vernon earned Grimsby back-to-back wins with a 2-1 victory at home to Yeovil.

Danny Collins and Francois Zoko traded blows in the first-half before Vernon came off the bench to settle the match 19 minutes from time.

Grimsby have now won three of their last four League Two matches.

Having made one change from the midweek victory at Accrington, the home side hit their straps quickly at Blundell Park.

And they needed just seven minutes to find an opener as Collins popped up at the far post to nod home from a corner.

Other attempts came from Jamille Matt and Martyn Woolford.

Despite their dominance, though, Grimsby were pegged back with 20 minutes on the clock as Yeovil broke and Zoko squeezed his effort inside the post.

Woolford tested Arthur Krysiak from distance before skipper Nathan Clarke glanced wide from an inviting Woolford corner.

It was much the same upon the restart, with chances being passed up before veteran striker Vernon swooped from close-range.
