PFL review: Debut goal for Younghusband while Stallion cruise

Philippines captain Phil Younghusband netted on his Davao Aguilas debut to help his side to a 2-2 draw against Global Cebu in the Philippines Football League.

In Saturday’s clash at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex, it was the visitors who drew first blood after 13 minutes.

Finding space down the left, Hikaru Minegishi proceeded to float an inch-perfect ball to the back post to find Paolo Salenga, who calmly lofted his shot over the onrushing Marko Trkulja.

Aguilas had the perfect opportunity to equalise in the 41st minute when they were awarded a penalty after Harisson Sawyer was dragged down inside the box.

In his first game for the club since joining from Meralco Manila, Younghusband stepped up to the spot and made no mistake in sending Patrick Deyto the wrong way.

Just two minutes later, however, Global capitalised on an error by Trkulja to reclaim the lead.

The Davao keeper was under little pressure when he spilled an attempt to claim Yu Hoshide’s freekick, allowing Salenga to help the ball on to leave Dennis Villanueva with a simple finish into the unguarded net.

Nonetheless, the hosts refused to give in and were rewarded four minutes after the hour mark.

After receiving possession from a Matthew Hartmann throw-in and driving to the edge of the box, Jason de Jong then laid the ball off to Brad McDonald, who curled a sublime left-footed effort into the top corner to earn Aguilas a share of the spoils.

Sunday’s action saw Stallion Laguna maintain their resurgence as they recorded a dominant 5-0 triumph over Ilocos United at the Binan Football Stadium.

Jesus Melliza was the star of the show as he netted four goals, while Stallion’s other strike came from Fitch Arboleda.

Finally, Masaki Yanagawa scored the only goal of the game five minutes after the half-hour mark to hand JPV Marikina a 1-0 triumph over Kaya FC-Makati.

Meralco Manila, who were not in action at the weekend, remain top of the table with a ten-point lead over Global but Ceres-Negros are looming as their likeliest challengers as they sit 15 points behind in fifth spot but hold six games in hand due to their AFC Cup commitments.
