Real Madrid 2 - 1 Fiorentina: Cristiano Ronaldo goal, assist as Real Madrid win Trofeo Bernabeu game

Cristiano Ronaldo looked a man keen on proving a point as he scored one and assisted the other as Real Madrid beat Fiorentina 2-1 in Wednesday's Trofeo Bernabeu game.

Fiorentina midfielder Jordan Veretout and young Madrid centre-forward Borja Mayoral were also on the scoresheet during the first half -- with the game petering out after the break as both coaches made a host of substitutions, and much of the interest centred on the sons of famous fathers who featured on both sides.

Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane named a much-changed lineup, but gave Ronaldo match time as the Portuguese cannot play in La Liga until Sep 20, with Sergio Ramos, also suspended for Sunday's La Liga clash with Valencia, the other big name in the XI.

A celebratory prematch atmosphere at the Bernabeu was quietened after only three minutes, when ex-Aston Villa midfielder Veretout scored a surprise opener, squeezing a shot through a forest of defenders from 20 yards.

Madrid were level just three minutes later when Marco Asensio fed Ronaldo, whose fizzing cross-shot found the unmarked Mayoral to slot home from three yards.

The game then settled down with Madrid dominating, and fellow Spain Under-21s Asensio, Marcos Llorente and Dani Ceballos impressing the crowd with some neat touches.

Young centre-forward Giovanni "son of Diego" Simeone was a handful up front for Fiorentina, where he was partnered by Federico Chiesa, whose father is ex-Italy striker Enrico.

Simeone won a corner from which Davide Astori was unfortunate not to make it 2-1 as his acrobatic volley hit the crossbar, then goalkeeper Kiko Casilla's head, then bounced to safety.

Ronaldo soon had Madrid back in front with a typical goal -- as he cut in from the left wing, cut back onto his right foot, and fired the ball right into the far top corner of the net. The Portuguese almost made it 3-1 when he was inches away from connecting with a Ceballos chipped cross.

Fiorentina coach Stefano Pioli changed all 11 players at the break, with Zidane sending on three substitutes, including his son Luca, a 19-year-old goalkeeper. Of the Fiore entrants, 18-year-old Ianis Hagi, son of Gheorghe, showed some silky touches in possession and looked the best prospect of all the "next generation" players on show.

Zidane sent on some more senior players, including Gareth Bale and Isco. The latter provided some entertainment with a sublimely timed-and-weighted chip over the top of the Fiorentina defence, but Lucas Vazquez's finish did not match the pass.

Fiorentina came closest to an equaliser when Luca Zidane fumbled a cross, but Khouma Babacar was almost able to take advantage.

Ronaldo was the only senior player to last the 90 minutes, and he hit a post late on after Isco's 20 yard shot was pushed out by Bartlomiej Dragowski.
