Thousands of people – including England striker Jermaine Defoe – turned out as the brave six-year-old, who died of cancer last week, was laid to rest yesterday.

Tearful mum Gemma called the little Sunderland fan her “superhero in the sky” in an emotional poem.

And it appears her sweet tribute may have been more true than she could have imagined.

Mark Shields, whose company provided the superheroes in fancy dress who accompanied Bradley’s coffin, spotted something poignant in the heavens above the funeral.

The businessman says a boy’s face appeared in the clouds above Blackhall Colliery, Co Durham, where the ceremony was taking place.

And the clouds parted to reveal a blue heart at the same moment.

Mr Shields shared the image on Facebook with the post: “I took this picture at Bradley’s funeral today, just a bit surreal that I looked up for a second and a blue heart formed over the church however the picture has revealed something else.

"Look in the top right corner at the little boys face.

"This is unbelievable. [sic]”

In her poem, Mrs Lowery said Bradley – who suffered from rare cancer neuroblastoma – was a “beautiful star” who was now “in heaven with the angels”.

She said: "For now my baby, we will say goodbye,

"We'll meet again, our superhero, high up in the sky."
