Jamie Carragher: Three or four Liverpool first-team players need to drop down to the bench

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged the club's manager Jurgen Klopp to make "three or four" quality signings this summer that are capable of going straight into the starting line-up.

The Reds are still waiting for their first trophy since Klopp took charge but they played some impressive football at times last season and ended up securing a place in the play-off round of the Champions League.

Carragher, however, stressed that it is vital that Liverpool improve their strength in depth to give themselves a good chance of having a successful campaign.

Carragher told the club's official website: "The actual team, the XI, could go up against anyone – we saw that in the big games with some great results in those games."

"But over the season, especially around Christmas and January, it was evident that the squad wasn't big enough or strong enough. That needs adding to."

"But rather than just adding players to the squad, you want to add players to the team. If you add three or four players and they go straight into the first XI, three or four of those who were playing week in, week out last season go to the bench."

"It makes the bench a lot stronger and your team a lot stronger. It's not just numbers. It’s about getting the right quality that can go straight into the team."

The Reds have already made one signing this summer, with young striker Dominic Solanke joining on a free transfer following his departure from Chelsea.

There are likely to be several further arrivals at Anfield as Klopp looks for his team to improve further.

Liverpool created 496 chances in the Premier League last season and scored an impressive 78 goals but they were vulnerable at the back at times.
