Chelsea transfer news: Diego Costa on verge of Atletico Madrid return - report
Diego Costa is on the verge of sealing a return to Atletico Madrid in January 2018

DIEGO COSTA is on the verge of leaving Chelsea to rejoin Atletico Madrid, according to reports.

Diego Costa, 28, has enjoyed a sensational season with his 20 goals helping Chelsea win the Premier League title.

But despite his importance in the Blues attack, the Spain international has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian and former club Atleti have shown a strong interest in the striker.

However, Costa categorically ruled out a move to the Far East last month by claiming he will only leave Chelsea for a return to Spain with Atleti.

And Spanish newspaper AS claim the La Liga giants have now stepped up their pursuit of Costa.

It is suggested Diego Simeone's side are very close to sealing a deal for him in January 2018 once their transfer ban is lifted by the Court of Arbitration.

The Spanish side are ready to spend big as they look to revamp their squad and challenge the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona for the La Liga title.

Sevilla winger Vitolo and Malaga free-kick specialist Sandro are both set to put pen to paper on contracts at Atletico Madrid, which will see them join the club next winter.

But Simeone will apparently make Costa his marquee signing.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has supposedly set his sights on a new striker for next season with Everton star Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata being lined up.

And Costa has admitted he will consider a return to Atleti if Conte decides to bolster his attacking ranks in the transfer window.

"I will only leave Chelsea for Atletico," Costa said.
