Luke Shaw out for the rest of the season: Man Utd also face injury crisis at youth level

Manchester United star Luke Shaw will be out for the rest of the season

The 21-year-old came off with ligament trouble in his foot just eight minutes into Sunday’s draw with Swansea.

He is due to see a specialist, but the problem almost certainly means he won’t kick a ball for the rest of the campaign.

And that means he is facing a major question mark over his future at the club, with boss Jose Mourinho already having singled him out for criticism this season.

United also lost central defender Eric Bailly in the Swansea game.

It leaves Mourinho facing tomorrow’s Europa League semi against Celta Vigo without seven front-line first team squad players.

Four of those are central defenders - Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo - plus Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Shaw.

Amazingly, Manchester United are even facing an injury crisis at reserve and youth team levels with a further 11 players currently out injured.

That limits Mourinho’s options in terms of who he can promote for today’s flight to Spain or Sunday’s league visit to Arsenal.

Midfielder Scott McTominay, 20, was on the bench on Sunday and is expected to remain in the squad.

Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera has warned his side not to blow their Europa League hopes by under-estimating unfashionable Celta.

And with United’s hopes of a top four finish in the Premier League looking unlikely, he said it is crucial Mourinho’s injury- hit team win the Europa League to ensure they qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Herrera said: “It’s crucial for us. Not just because it’s a European title, which is important but also the fact that you can qualify for the Champions League and play in a European Super Cup final.

"There are many positives to gain from winning the competition. We’ve already won two titles this season, the Community Shield after beating Leicester City and the EFL Cup against Southampton.

"Celta are a very complicated team, with players that have a lot of quality.

"In theory, we are the strongest team left in the competition but we have to respect all of our rivals because otherwise, they can surprise us.
