Aguero played as a second striker for former club Atletico Madrid and says he only became a centre-forward after joining Manchester City for £38m in 2011.

And he is happy to revert to his previous role if Pep Guardiola prefers Brazilian wonder boy Jesus - who has scored four goals in his first five appearances for the club - through the middle.

"I always played as a second striker," he said. "People think that I'm a No9 but I've only become a No9 over the last two-and-a-half years at City. Manuel Pellegrini often played me as a lone striker and it's been the same under Pep.

"I've been adapting to it over the last few years. Maybe people look at my goals and say 'What a No9!' I just want to play."

Aguero's hopes of adding to his 31-goal tally this season depend on the result of a scan on the groin injury he suffered at Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola is ready to offer Jesus Navas a new contract

Meanwhile, Guardiola is surprisingly ready to offer Jesus Navas a new contract.

The Spain winger's current deal expires this summer and he had been linked with a return to Seville where he played before a £16m move to the Etihad in 2013.

But Guardiola has been impressed by his performances as a right wing back in recent games and wants to keep him as part of next season's squad.
