Sulley Muntari is shown a yellow card after complaining about racism

Italian football has been engulfed in yet another disgusting episode of racism.

Former Ghana international Sulley Muntari walked off the pitch having been shown a yellow card for continually complaining to the referee about offensive chanting from Cagliari fans.

The 2010 Champions League-winner was berated by home supporters at the Stadio Sant'Elia as he played for Pescara in a Serie A fixture.

He complained to referee Daniele Minelli, who initially ignored the situation before cautioning the former Portsmouth player.

A disgusted Muntari reacted by walking off the pitch and leaving Pescara with ten men for the final few minutes of the match.

After the match he explained how events unfolded and revealed he was even racially abused by a child sitting with his parents.

In an emotional interview, Muntari even explained the classy way in which he dealt with his abuser.

He exploded: "You all saw what happened.

"The fans were chanting all first-half — there was even a child doing it with his parents nearby.

"I even gave him my shirt to teach him that he shouldn't do these things.

"It is important to act as an exampled and help him grow.

"Then, in the second half, it happened with the whole stand and I spoke to the referee — and there he really p***** me off!

"He told me I shouldn't interact with the crowd. I asked him: 'Did you hear them?'

"I told him he should have the courage to stop the game, a referee's job isn't just to blow his whistle for a foul — he needs to do everything.

"Even hearing these things and acting as an example."

Depressingly, he was criticised by Pescara manager Zdenek Zeman.

The 69-year-old coach said: "Muntari left the pitch because of racist chanting, but we shouldn't react with such vigilante gestures.

"You have to accept certain things and move on.

"Racism is spoken of a lot and, today, this has happened to Muntari, who has been playing in Italy for many years.

"We would like to change the mentality."

Earlier in the season, Lazio's Senad Lulic received a 20-day ban for a making a racist comment about Roma's Antonio Rudiger.

And, more recently, there was a Nazi flag spotted flying out of the window of a house overlooking the Serie B match between Virtus Entella and Ascoli.
