Arsenal midfielder Wilshere, who has been on loan on the south coast since August, damaged his ankle in a collsion with Harry Kane during the Cherries’ 4-0 drubbing at Tottenham on Saturday.

Scans have revealed the injury-plagued 25-year-old, jeered by Spurs fans as he hobbled off the White Hart Lane pitch, has fractured a bone in his fibula.

Eddie Howe was already in two minds about whether to try to buy Wilshere but after the latest setback, the Bournemouth boss is ready to look elsewhere.

Wilshere has played 27 games for the Cherries but managed only two assists and failed to score a single goal, and Bournemouth would have to smash their wage structure to accommodate his £100,000-a-week wages.

In a statement confirming the injury, Howe said: “It is a big blow to lose Jack. We have loved working with him since he arrived at the club. He has made a huge contribution to our season, both on and off the pitch.

"We wish him a quick recovery and thank him for his effort and professionalism while he was with us.”

Luckless Wilshere, who will return to Arsenal for treatment, is about to enter the final year of his Gunners contract and it remains to be seen if he will be offered an extension.

Wilshere’s career has been blighted by a succession of injuries and he missed most of last season with a broken leg. It was initially hoped he had escaped serious injury this week after earlier scans showed no break.

His absence is also a blow to Bournemouth, who are not yet safe from relegation and face a crucial double header with fellow strugglers Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
