Dortmund bomb may have been made from military grade materials

German police are investigating whether the explosives used in the attack on the Borussia Dortmund team earlier this week had their origins in a military depot of the German army.

According to reports, both the material used and the detonators betray a high degree of sophistication and would be very difficult to obtain.

The Berlin newspaper Der Tagesspiegel received an email purporting to be from a right-wing organisation warning of a further attack in Cologne.

The attorney's office has thus far been unable establish a concrete link between the attack and sole man in custody over the matter, a 26 year old Iraqi with Islamic State links.

The communication received by Der Tagesspiegel was critical of multicultural society and referenced Adolf Hitler, saying that this is a 'final warning'.

The purported attacked in Cologne related to a left-wing counter-march during the congress of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the city on April 22.

Jihadist writing was found at the scene of the crime, but experts doubt the authenticity and feel it doesn't follow the usual protocols of Islamic terrorism.

Another theory is that the attack may have been in retaliation for an attack by Dortmund fans on their RB Leipzig counterparts earlier this season.

The attack inured Spain defender Marc Bartra - who needed an operation as a result - and a policeman guarding the bus.

Security has been stepped up at Bundesliga grounds this weekend as a result of the incident.
