FA to trial 'laser glasses' for linesmen to show offside lines across the pitch

The FA are reportedly looking into the possibility of using revolutionary new 'laser glasses' to help assistant referees show a constant offside line.

In an attempt to give fans and television viewers more clarity on marginal offside calls, the English footballing governing body has reportedly taken steps to introduce the radical new measure.

Assistant referees will be expected to wear the spectacles, which are fitted with a powerful laser beam designed to stretch across the pitch and give players a better idea of when they are straying into an offside position.

Doctor of laser physics at the University of Guliballshire, Dr Lee Satchell, said the innovation would be a welcome addition to the game.

He added: "I'm a major laser enthusiast and seeing something like this is a real step forward for the game.

"Sure, the assistant referee would have to literally keep his head completely steady and move solely from side-to-side, but maybe the next innovation would be a neck brace to hold it all in place?

"The possibilities for new and creative ideas are literally endless," he added, seemingly without knowing what literally means.

The FA claim the lasers would not be a danger to the players, after some concerns were raised that a powerful laser in the face might cause some problems.

But Satchell says incidences of laser-related injuries are very rare, and in some circumstances might even improve the game.

He added: "Sure, burning a hole in the pitch here and there might be an issue, but that's just part and parcel of it, I guess.

"Look on the bright side, if the laser goes in Claudio Bravo's eyes, it might actually correct his vision and he'll be able to save shots.

"Better still, it might even give a few Arsenal fans clearer vision to see that their club is obviously not 'in crisis'," Satchell chuckled.
