Gianluigi Buffon’s legacy in FIFA won’t ever be forgotten

Gianluigi Buffon is one of the greatest goalkeepers who has ever lived – and his career in FIFA is just as impressive.

The 39-year-old is one of a handful of players who has featured in EA Sports flagship footballing sim for more than a decade.

In that time, Buffon’s been recreated on a host of consoles – from PS1 and PS3, all the way up to PS4 and Xbox One.

We take a look at just how drastically his appearance has changed in FIFA through the years.

FIFA 04 and FIFA 05

Back then, these would have been cutting edge… but they bear little resemblance to the Italian shot stopper.

FIFA 04 was released on the PS1, while FIFA 05 came out on the, then brand new, PS2.

FIFA 06 and FIFA 07

It still wasn’t quite right with Buffon looking more like Ricky Martin.

In fact, despite a year between the two games, he’s almost identical.

FIFA 08 and FIFA 09

Again, very little changes in FIFA 08, before a complete overhaul in 09.

For the first time in the series, Buffon ‘sort of’ looks how he should… at least in the hair department.

Sadly, that gormless expression and dead-behind-the-eyes look is far from authentic.

FIFA 10 and FIFA 11

Finally… Buffon looks how he’s meant to.

By FIFA 11 he’s unmistakably the Italian shot stopper.

FIFA 12 and FIFA 13

A few more tweaks see Buffon look more realistic than ever in FIFA 12.

By 13, skin tone has become more lifelike and his face boasts more subtle detail.

Hair has improved, too.

FIFA 14 and FIFA 15

Slightly more detail again – although a lot of the work was probably spent refining animation than tweaking with character models too much.

By FIFA 15, he’s capable of showing more emotion – although his eyes are a bit on the small side.

FIFA 16 and FIFA 17

Not a huge difference between FIFA 14 and 15 – but a huge leap in FIFA 17.

It’s largely thanks to Frostbite, which allows much more detailed and realistic player faces.

We can’t wait to see what he looks like in FIFA 18.
