Gary Cahill: I could never replace Chelsea captain John Terry

Gary Cahill has insisted that he would never attempt to replace John Terry at Chelsea.

Following an injury sustained to the Blues skipper at the start of September, the England international has taken over as the captain on the pitch and has kept the 35-year-old out of the team ever since Antonio Conte’s switch to a 3-4-3 formation.

With Terry out of contract in the summer there is a possibility that Cahill could become the west London outfit’s permanent leader next season, although he maintains that the club legend remains an important member of the squad.

"I would never try to fill John Terry’s boots. You can never fill that position,” Cahill told the Evening Standard, as reported by ITV.

"When I took over as captain this season, either through him not being picked or not being available, it was a privilege to do that.

"Firstly, I have learned from how he manages himself, how he plays and how he does things. But secondly, I never thought for one minute, or will ever think, that I’m replacing him.

"He is right at the top and whoever comes in after him is never going to achieve what he’s done at the club.

"It’s one of those situations where you have to separate yourself from it. The way that I prepare, the way that I play, the way that I like to speak to the lads or manage situations is the way that I do things.

"Nothing has changed in my game since I had that armband, apart from the fact I’m now 31 and I have learned a lot from someone like him. I will continue to learn from him while he is at the club.”

Cahill came up with a massive goal for Chelsea at the weekend as his late winner against Stoke City ensured they still have a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with 10 games of the campaign still to play.

Terry’s appearances have been limited to the FA Cup over the past few months but has made enough appearances to qualify for a winner’s medal should the Blues lift the trophy for the second time in three seasons.
