Kazuyoshi Miura, aged 50, becomes football's oldest ever goalscorer

We are familiar with the expression 'Old is Gold' in various spheres of life and there are people who are defining the term, with the latest being a footballer hailing from Japan.

Japanese star Kazuyoshi Miura embedded his name in the history books after scoring the winner against Thespa Kusatsu, thereby becoming the oldest player to score a competitive goal at the age of 50 and 14 days.

He expressed his delight after grabbing the only goal of the match by saying: "I'm glad to contribute to a win. I'm always looking to score but had a good feeling about today's game."

By netting his first league goal of the season, Miura also broke his own record of being the oldest J-League player to score a goal.

A sublime cross from the left flank was directed towards the goal but saved by the keeper, which the veteran then fired home from a tight angle.

The previous record was held by former England international Stanley Matthews, who was aged 50 years and five days in 1965 when he achieved the feat.

Nicknamed 'King Kazu', Miura is currently into his 32nd year of his professional career and it is the 13th season he is representing the Yokohama-based club.

With 89 international caps to his name from 1990-2000, Miura scored 55 goals but never represented the Japan national team in World Cups.

He recently signed a new one-year extension with his present club in the second division of the Japanese league.

Speaking on the issue, the forward said: "I hope to keep fighting with all my might together with people involved with the club, my teammates and supporters who have always given me support."
