Ronaldo reveals the reason behind his infamous World Cup 2002 haircut

There was a lot to remember about the 2002 World Cup.

The mental stadiums, the Fevernova ball, Ronaldinho lobbing Seaman from the half-way line.

But arguably the most iconic image was Ronaldo, who'd been written off due to injury prior to the tournament, holding aloft the World Cup trophy with *that* haircut.

The triangle patch of hair looked like Ronaldo's barber had run out of electricity half-way through the cut.

Now El Fenomeno has spoken about why he cut his hair in such a peculiar manner.

Talking to ESPN Brazil, Ronaldo said: "My groin was hurting. I was only at 60%. So I shaved my head.

"Everybody was only talking about my injury. When I arrived in training with this haircut everybody stopped talking about the injury."

Cunning from Ronaldo. But we'd expect nothing else from one of football's greatest ever players.

The haircut worked a treat for Ronaldo, who finished as the tournament's top goalscorer with eight goals, three ahead of Rivaldo and Miroslav Klose.

He was also part of the 'magic-quartet' alongiside Adriano, Robinho and Kaka in Germany four years later, where he became the highest goalscorer in World Cup history.

Klose has since taken that record off him, although he was always a strict short back and sides man.

We'd hate to think what the Saudi FA would have to say about Ronaldo's trim, given what happened to Asamoah Gyan.
