Real Madrid have a long-standing interest in Aguero who raised the prospect of a summer move after City’s 2-1 win over Swansea by suggesting his future is unclear and it is up to Manchester City to decide whether he stays at the Etihad.

After being named on the bench by Pep Guardiola for the second game running, the 28-year-old Argentina striker said: “I have three months to do my best and then we’ll see what happens with my future.

"In three years my contract is up, that’s why I say I’m happy at the club. In these last three months that are left I have to help the club and, as I say, the club will decide if I have a place here or not.”

Aguero has been left out on five occasions this season by Guardiola amid suggestions of tensions between them but he insisted he had no problem with being left out.

"Sometimes this happens,” he added. “When you’re on the bench you have to wait for your opportunity. I have to help the team as much as I can in these three months, afterwards we’ll see what the club wants to do with me.”

And Aguero played down the significance of his recent dinner date with Guardiola, saying: “It was [about] things to do with the club, nothing strange. Private things that have to stay inside those walls. I want to stay, of course.”

Aguero praised Jesus, whose extra-time winner yesterday moved City up to third.

"He’s a great player, he’s a very young player but he will learn a lot at City and he will have a great future at the club,” he said. “Yes, at the moment I have to watch what he does, perhaps to learn a little bit. But I am how I am. I have spent a lot of years in Europe playing the same way.”

Guardiola insists Aguero has accepted his recent demotion with good grace and remains a key part of his plans.

"It [his reaction] is perfect, don’t worry about that. Of course he wants to play,” he said. “It must not be easy for him. I understand that. Sergio remains one of the most important players in our squad and what we have to do, he will be so, so important.

"He is going to play a lot of games with Gabriel and without Gabriel, but today I decide to continue with these three guys [Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane].”

Guardiola admitted he has been surprised Jesus has made such a sudden impact following last month’s £27m move from Palmeiras who he helped to the Brazilian title in December.

"In the last two or three years he has never had a break,” he said. “I told him when he arrived to take his time and come back when you are ready but he is 19 years old, Brazilian, physically strong, he needs few training sessions to be ready. Now we have to protect him but everybody is a bit surprised by his level.”
