Mark Lawrenson explains why Liverpool are struggling

The Liverpool legend attempts to explain the Merseyside outfit's recent struggles in the Premier League

Mark Lawrenson has attempted to shed light on Liverpool's disappointing start to 2017 in all competitions.

Liverpool crashed out of the EFL Cup last week after a 2-0 loss to Southampton after Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long scored an added-time winner in a 1-0 win at Anfield in the second leg of their last-four clash.

The 18-time English champions exited the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday afternoon after Liverpool lost 2-1 to Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers following first-half goals from Richard Stearman and Andreas Weimann.

Liverpool have failed to win a Premier League game in 2017 so far after back-to-back stalemates with Sunderland and Manchester United before a surprise 3-2 loss to Swansea City at Anfield in their penultimate top-flight game in January.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's home clash against defending champions Chelsea on Tuesday night, ex-Reds defender Lawrenson attempted to shed some light on what has caused the Merseyside outfit's sudden slump in form.

"Every team I've seen the Reds play since the start of 2017 have played the same formation – a 4-5-1, or near enough to it – and have sent the Liverpool players inside to where they have got numbers," Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

"They are basically saying to them ‘go on, try to break us down' and, as good as Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino are, it is very rare to see Liverpool get behind teams."
