Manchester City have told Barcelona they are ready to pay a world-record fee of £100 million to sign Lionel Messi, according to The Sun .
The sum elipses the £89m paid by cross-city rivals Manchester United to bring Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford from Juventus in the summer.
Pep Guardiola has faced criticism just over six months into his tenure at the Eithad Stadium and is now ready to break the bank on his former star as contract talks between the player and Barcelona rumble on.
Messi has 18 months left on his current contract and is widely expected to pen an extension at Camp Nou, though City are ready to unsettle the Argentine with an increase on his already-extravagant wage.
