Liverpool player is statistically Europe's best midfielder right now

Liverpool are on cloud nine at the moment following their impressive 1-0 win over Manchester City on New Year's Eve.

While they remain six points behind Chelsea, who top the Premier League on 49 points, Jurgen Klopp's men are in excellent form and still have every chance of winning the title.

The January transfer window could ultimately make or break Liverpool's season, with fans desperate for a new goalkeeper to arrive.

Joe Hart has been linked with a move to Anfield, which would represent a considerable upgrade on both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.

One area that Liverpool don't need to bolster, though, is their midfield, especially when they have statistically the best midfielder in Europe right now.

Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Georginio Wijnaldum, Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and James Milner are all capable of playing central and all excellent players in their own right.

And while Coutinho is arguably the best of them all, it's Lallana who has contributed most to Liverpool's title charge.

According to Squawka, no midfielder in Europe's top five leagues (England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy) has been involved in more league goals than the Englishman.

Lallana's assist for Wijnaldum against City was his seventh of the season - his highest ever tally - adding to the seven goals he has scored in the Premier League.

Asked to explain his rich form in November, Lallana hailed the impact Klopp has made since taking over as manager last year.

"Whatever he has done different to me, I think he has done to everyone," he said, per ESPN. "It isn't just myself. As a team we are performing to a high level.

"I am enjoying working with him, I feel I have really good relationship with him and that he trusts me.

"I trust him as well and when you have that connection, he can say stuff to you that you don't want to hear and it doesn't feel negative or personal. It's always just business-related and wanting to win."

Liverpool fans will only hope Lallana's rich vein of form sustains as the season progresses.
