Southend United vs Charlton Athletic - Ferdinand should make clash with Charlton

Southend hope to have defender Anton Ferdinand available for the visit of Charlton.

Ferdinand sustained an ankle knock during the 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon on Boxing Day but is expected to be fit for selection.

Goalkeeper Mark Oxley faces up to a month on the sidelines after hyper-extending his elbow in training, so 20-year-old Ted Smith is again set to deputise.

Forward Nile Ranger has been nursing a groin injury and will be assessed, while Dave Mooney and Ben Coker (both ankle) remain on the sidelines alongside on-loan Crystal Palace defender Ryan Inniss, who is out after needing shoulder surgery.

Charlton have seen their injury problems increase with the loss of Johnnie Jackson to a hamstring strain.

Right-back Chris Solly has resumed training after a knee problem but he is not expected to be involved for the trip to Essex.

Midfielder Ricky Holmes (foot) remains unavailable, as does defender Jason Pearce following groin surgery.

Goalkeeper Declan Rudd is another who continues his recovery from a knee injury alongside forward Lee Novak.
