Bayern Munich 5 - 0 Wolfsburg: Robert Lewandowski bags brace as Bayern Munich beat Wolfsburg to go top

Bayern Munich moved to the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday thanks to a comfortable 5-0 victory over crisis club Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena.

Arjen Robben put the Bavarians in front in the 19th minute and Robert Lewandowski made it two within five minutes.

Lewandowski's second put the seal on Bayern's win before Thomas Muller ended his 999-minute goalscoring drought to open his league account for the season and put the cherry on top of Bayern's win.

Douglas Costa added a fifth and, with Leipzig losing in Ingolstadt, it meant the record champions returned to the summit of the table on goal difference, 11 days before they host second-placed Leipzig in their final fixture of 2016.

Wolfsburg, meanwhile, remain perilously close to the relegation zone after losing for the eighth time this season.

Juan Bernat had Bayern's first chance, teed up by Lewandowski, but his shot was diverted over by Diego Benaglio, who knew little about it as the ball struck his shoulder.

Bayern's mounting pressure finally led to the opening goal in the 19th minute when Robben did what he does best, curling a left-footed shot into the opposite corner after cutting in from the right.

Lewandowski doubled Bayern's advantage just a few minutes later when Arturo Vidal's shot was deflected to the Pole, who had the easy task of providing the finish into an open goal from five yards with no sign of a Wolfsburg defender nearby.

The Poland international had a shot blocked before half-time, but it was not long into the second half when Lewandowski - who scored five goals in just nine minutes against Wolfsburg last season - grabbed his second and Bayern's third.

Thiago Alcantara touched the ball back for him to drill in a shot from just outside the penalty area which beat Benaglio into the bottom left-hand corner of his goal and effectively ensured Bayern would take three points once again.

All that was left to improve the afternoon from a Bayern point of view was the first goal of the season for Muller.

It came with 15 minutes to go as Robben threaded the ball through to him and - although his shot was hardly of a textbook nature - it was enough to guide the ball in, much to the relief of the Germany international who ended his lengthy drought.

More was to follow too when substitute Costa fired in a fifth from just inside the penalty area as Bayern put five past Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena just like they had done last year.
