Chapecoense redesign club badge in touching tribute to air disaster victims

Chapecoense have redesigned their club badge in the wake of the recent Colombian air disaster.

The new crest honours the 19 Chapecoense players who were killed in the plane crash last month. The Brazilian club were travelling to face Atletico Nacional in the Copa Sudamericana final when the chartered aircraft crashed near the city of Medellin.

Chapecoense were awarded the title by the South American Football Confederation CONMEBOL, and have celebrated their posthumous triumph, as well as to remember those who died, by adding two stars to their crest.

A large, white star now sits above the green badge, while a smaller, green star is placed inside the ‘F' of the ACF.

WHAT DO THE STARS MEAN?

A statement on the club's website read, via the Daily Mail: "The first star mentions the conquest of the Copa Sudamericana 2016. She is white in a sign of peace. The peace found by our Eternal Champions. In addition, white symbolises the light that will guide us forward.

"The second star inside the letter F - which refers to football - is the subtle yet powerful way of eternalizing those who dedicated their lives to Chapecoense.

"Due to a fatality, we enter into history. This is indisputable and unchangeable. Undoubtedly, too, while we know we now begin a new era, we will maintain the essence of the club.

"We will continue to write the story that was being drawn with such care. But we will not do so without eternalizing - in memory, heart and shield - the legacy of affection, solidarity and unity.

"More than that, with the love and commitment that all those who departed had for Chapecoense."

BARCELONA'S INVITATION

Spanish giants Barcelona have invited Chapecoense to the Camp Nou to take part in their annual Joan Gamper Trophy match, a pre-season game that kicks off Barca's season.

"FC Barcelona wants to pay tribute to the 71 people who died in the accident and their families, and will therefore make the 2017 Joan Gamper Trophy a great tribute to the world of football through various activities around this match which will become known as the date of this celebration approaches," a statement read.

"Along with the invitation to Chapecoense to the 2017 Joan Gamper Trophy, FC Barcelona would like to collaborate on the institutional and sporting reconstruction of the club, and help to recover the competitive level that it had."
