Casillas creates Champions League history

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas pulled level with Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs as the player with the most appearances in the first knockout round of the Champions League after Porto sealed a second-placed finish behind Leicester City on Wednesday.

The Portuguese side were in need of a win in their final group stage match to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition, and they did so in spectacular style, romping past first-placed Leicester City 5-0.

In achieving a second-placed finish in Group G, the 35-year-old shot-stopper is set to participate in the last-16 of the competition for the 17th time in his career, which sees him equal the record previous set by midfielder Ryan Giggs.

It's a remarkable record for the veteran custodian who has participated in 18 Champions Leagues in his career thus far, meaning he's only been eliminated from the group stage on one occasion.

The record sees Casillas surpass Paul Scholes with 16 appearances, whilst Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso are next on the list with 14 and Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben are all tied on 13.

Meanwhile, the victory also sees Casillas rack up the most wins in the Champions League with 97 wins, surpassing former Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez on 96.
