Bayer Leverkusen 3 - 0 Monaco: Bayer Leverkusen end Monaco's unbeaten run

Bayer Leverkusen inflicted a first defeat in 10 matches on Monaco in their Champions League Group E dead rubber.

Vladlen Yurchenko and Julian Brandt put the German side 2-0 up inside 48 minutes and victory was wrapped up eight minutes from time when Wendell's penalty hit the crossbar and went in off goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis.

The defeat was Monaco's first in 11 matches in all competitions but with top spot already secured the result mattered little to either side, although for Leverkusen it was their first Champions League home win since September 2015.

Javier Hernandez forced De Sanctis to tip over at full stretch early on while a booking for defender Jemerson midway through the first half ruled him out of Monaco's next match

The hosts continued to look more threatening and eventually made the breakthrough on the half-hour when Yurchenko fired home a from distance giving De Sanctis no chance.

Monaco's goalkeeper found himself in a similar situation just after the break when Hakan Calhanoglu teed up Brandt who was slightly fortunate to see his shot take a deflection and loop over the Italian.

But things were to get even worse for De Sanctis late on after Abdou Diallo brought down Robbie Kruse in the penalty area.

Wendell's spot-kick beat the goalkeeper but rebounded down off the underside of the crossbar - technically Leverkusen's fifth missed penalty in a row - and went in off the helpless 39-year-old.

There was still time left for Diallo and Henandez both to miss chances for their respective sides, neither of which would have made any difference to the result.
