Steven Gerrard has landed his first coaching role

When Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from football last month, Liverpool fans were desperate for him to return to the club.

'Mr. Liverpool' has insisted that he wants to pursue a career in management and supporters want him to return to Anfield in some capacity.

And that's exactly the case, according to the Mirror.

They're reporting that Gerrard has landed his first job in management and will take up a role in the club's academy.

The former captain will help bring through future stars at the academy. Gerrard himself graduated from the academy and will be tasked with helping the future generation achieve the sort of career he did on Merseyside.

The news comes in the same week that Ben Woodburn became the club's youngest-ever goalscorer with his strike against Leeds in the EFL Cup.

Is there a better person to help Woodburn reach the next level and make the step up from academy to first-team than Gerrard?

After his retirement, Jurgen Klopp suggested Gerrard should take a low-key role, rather than dive in at the deep end as he begins his next career.

Both Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy believe Gerrard is a future Liverpool manager, but his first job will be to bring through the talented youngsters at the club.

He was offered the manager's job at League One side MK Dons but, after a few days of consideration, he eventually turned it down.

At the age of 36, and still capable of competing at a high level, Gerrard also had a few playing offers. AC Milan were just one of the clubs that offered him a lucrative contract to continue playing but the midfielder admitted that felt it was time to call it quits in terms of playing.

GERRARD'S DREAM

And Gerrard has regularly hinted that he would like to become Liverpool boss one day. In September, he said: "The dream come true would be to manage Liverpool, when the Liverpool job becomes available.

"There are world-class managers there ready already but we'll have to wait and see, it would be the icing on the cake.

"When you get to a certain age... my age, you need to start thinking seriously about a life after football.

"I just signed a one-year extension, I need to start planning for the future. I am planning on doing my badges and qualifications over the next 12 months.

"I definitely see myself as a manager rather than a coach, but that could change. I remember speaking to Jamie Carragher and he really fancied it but he's decided media is what he wants to do.

"It's strange seeing him on Sky but I'm really delighted he's doing it... He can leave managing Liverpool to me!"

And it seems Gerrard has just taken his first step to making his dream come true.

Liverpool fans will just be waiting for an official announcement from the club.
