Barnsley defender Aidy White faces an extended spell on the sidelines as he requires surgery to resolve a gluteal muscle problem.

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom will also be without Sam Morsy against Wigan, the on-loan midfielder's parent club, so Josh Scowen is expected to return to the starting line-up on Saturday.

Centre-half Marc Roberts and winger Saidy Janko have both returned to full training following respective hamstring and thigh injuries and could return to contention.

Winger Adam Hammill and striker Tom Bradshaw are pushing for recalls to the starting XI as the Reds chase their second win in 10 Sky Bet Championship matches.

Wigan could have defenders Andy Kellett and Donervon Daniels back after both returned to first-team training during the international break.

New manager Warren Joyce has taken advantage of the absence of a fixture last weekend to conduct extra sessions to get to know his players and improve fitness levels.

Striker Will Grigg and midfielder Shaun MacDonald were the only players missing due to international commitments.

Midfielder Alex Gilbey and defender Reece James are expected to remain on the sidelines until Christmas.
