Wolfsburg 1 - 2 Bayer Leverkusen: Leverkusen comeback adds to Wolfsburg's woes

Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to heap more misery on Wolfsburg with a 2-1 win at the Volkswagen-Arena.

Maximilian Arnold gave Wolfsburg the lead just before half-time, but a much-improved Leverkusen in the second half took all three points with goals from Admir Mehmedi and Tin Jedvaj.

Their win lifts the pressure off their coach Roger Schmidt while at the same time probably convincing Wolfsburg to look elsewhere for their new permanent coach, with Valerien Ismael failing to impress in his two league games in charge and the Wolves still stuck inside the bottom three.

In a meeting of two of Germany's crisis clubs, attractive combination football was always going to be a rarity and chances were equally hard to come by.

Leverkusen hit the woodwork in the 19th minute through Wendell's angled drive before Daniel Caligiuri blazed Wolfsburg's first effort over.

Mario Gomez shot into the side-netting before the Wolves took a lead which was just about warranted on the balance of play.

Caligiuri's cross from the right wing was met at the near post by Arnold, who hammered a shot past Bernd Leno.

Leverkusen started the second half much better and Kevin Kampl went close to equalising before Julian Brandt missed the target.

Mehmedi wasted the Werkself's next chance as Schmidt's men turned up the pressure on their hosts, who were reduced to defending their lead.

They managed that only up to the 79th minute, when Mehmedi brought Leverkusen level.

The Switzerland forward met Benjamin Henrich's low cross from close range to reward the visitors for their growing pressure.

Jedvaj earned them an even greater reward when he grabbed a winner with just six minutes remaining.
