Barnsley will be without suspended skipper Conor Hourihane for the visit of former boss Lee Johnson's Bristol City.
Hourihane will serve a one-game ban after reaching five yellow cards while fellow midfielder Josh Scowen serves the final game of his three-match suspension.
Scowen, plus striker Tom Bradshaw and centre-half Marc Roberts all missed training this week due to sickness bug at Oakwell and head coach Paul Heckingbottom could delay naming his starting line-up.
Adam Hammill is pushing for a recall and fellow winger Ryan Williams (groin) hopes to feature again after making his first appearance of the season off the bench in last week's win at Brentford. Aidy White (gluteal muscle) and Saidy Janko (thigh) remain sidelined.
City manager Johnson is sweating on the fitness of Luke Freeman ahead of the trip to South Yorkshire.
The winger limped off with an ankle injury during last weekend's win over Blackburn and is awaiting the results of a scan.
Top-scorer Tammy Abraham is likely to be recalled to the starting XI after featuring as a substitute for the midweek EFL Cup defeat to Hull.
Fellow forward Lee Tomlin scored from the bench against the Tigers and is another player pushing for a starting spot.
