Modric expected to retire at Real Madrid

May 2020 is a date that is already marked in red by Luka Modric, the date in which his new contract with Real will end. The Croatian has had an idea for years: he wants to retire in the colours of Real Madrid.

In the last of four interviews recently granted exclusively to MARCA, Modric made public his retirement plan.

"It is my desire, of course, although not many players retire here. Why not? I see it as possible, but we'll see what happens in the future," he said.

"Right now I just think of Real Madrid, I have a desire to be here as long as possible. I do not think of other clubs or other leagues."

Modric was once a Madrid player cast aside by Jose Mourinho. Now he has become the indispensable man. In May 2020, Modric will be 35-years-old, he will want to play on longer.

On Wednesday, the midfielder will appear before the media to celebrate his new commitment to Real Madrid. He knows it is almost an impossible mission to retire at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. The last great player who did so was Zinedine Zidane. The past makes bleak viewing for someone with such a goal.

'Lukita' is no player, no man of unrealistic dreams. He has his feet planted firmly on the ground. His aim to retire in white is more than a dream, it is a promise, and Modric always keeps his word.
