Sam Allardyce could be BANNED from football: The police have got involved

SAM ALLARDYCE is facing a potential ban from football.

The disgraced former England boss could be charged with bringing the game into disrepute according to FA chief executive Martin Glenn.

Allardyce was axed on Tuesday after just 67 days and one game in charge after being filmed giving advice to undercover reporters on how to get around FA transfer rules.

Glenn confirmed last night that Allardyce could be charged over his controversial comments.

"It is realistic he could be charged,” said Glenn. “The newspaper that made the revelations are releasing the full transcripts to the police, which is what has to happen.

"Once we get full access to them we’ll pass them to our Integrity Unit. We’ve dealt with Sam as an employee. Sam’s role as a participant in the game will be part of this next process, if there is one.

"The decision will be based on the merits of the evidence. Bringing the game into disrepute might be a possible charge.

"A potential sanction could range from a fine to a ban. That’s what history shows. But that is for a tribunal to decide.”

Don Revie was found guilty of the same charge and banned from football for 10 years by the FA in 1977 after negotiating a job with the UAE while still England manager – although it was overruled in court.

Glenn also admitted that as well as the police, Allardyce could also face questions on his tax affairs from HMRC adding they “could also be players in this if there is seen to be tax avoidance.”

Arsene Wenger yesterday admitted he could “one day” manage England confirming Starsport’s exclusive story earlier this week that he is interested in taking the role.

And Glenn believes the Frenchman, who is out of contract at Arsenal next summer, would be a good fit for the England job.

Glenn said: “Yes, Arsene Wenger will be out of contract at the end of the season. Of course he’d fit the criteria perfectly. So would a few others.

“The criteria won’t change, it wasn’t wrong before. You don’t have to be wedded to the fact he has to be English, that narrows the field too far. We want the best person for the job. Being English is a bonus.

“Premier League experience would be preferable. If you look at the track record of successful international managers they are usually older. It doesn’t mean they have to be. The average age of a successful manager is probably in their 60s.”

Asked if the FA are prepared to wait until the end of the season for their man, Glenn added: “We want to get the right person.”
