Wayne Rooney is set to remain as England captain under caretaker manager Gareth Southgate.

Southgate, who has taken charge of the national side following the departure of Sam Allardyce, has confirmed that he intends to name Rooney as captain for the upcoming games against Malta and Slovenia.

Rooney skippered England to a 1-0 win over Slovakia earlier this month and Southgate has chosen to retain the Manchester United striker as captain following discussions with the 30-year-old.

Southgate was placed in temporary charge of the Three Lions on Tuesday evening after Allardyce and the Football Association mutually agreed to terminate the former Sunderland manager's contract, following an undercover investigation by the Daily Telegraph.

England U21 boss Southgate will now take charge of the senior side's next four matches, starting with a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Malta on October 8.

Southgate then leads his team to face Slovenia three days later while the FA continues to search for a permanent replacement for Allardyce.
