Sporting are up and running in the Champions League after defeating Legia Warsaw 2-0 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
First-half goals from former Fulham forward Bryan Ruiz and summer signing Bas Dost gave the Portuguese side their first victory in Group F following the heartbreaking loss at Real Madrid on match day one.
Legia, thrashed 6-0 at home by Borussia Dortmund two weeks ago, remain without a goal or a point ahead of daunting back-to-back matches with holders Real.
Jefferson Nascimento sent a shot over the crossbar for the hosts shortly before Ruiz opened the scoring after 27 minutes. Bruno Cesar sent a cross into the six-yard box where the Costa Rican swept the ball past goalkeeper Arkadiusz Malarz.
The visitors responded with a long-range free-kick from Thibault Moulin but it was a simple save for Rui Patricio.
Sporting doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Adrien Silva crossed the ball from the left channel and Dost volleyed home from close range.
Silva threatened a third goal early in the second half but Malarz made a good save and then Bruno Cesar went close on the hour for the hosts.
Miroslav Radovic and Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe squandered decent opportunities for Legia but the Poles never really looked like getting back into the match and now face an uphill struggle to qualify, even at this early stage.
