Leganes 0 - 0 Atletico de Madrid: Atletico Madrid drop more points after being held by Leganes

Atletico Madrid dropped points against a promoted side for the second successive game after being held to a goalless draw by battling Leganes on Saturday night.

Diego Simeone's men, who shared a dramatic 1-1 draw with Alaves in their LaLiga opener last week, created several good chances against their Madrid neighbours but could find no way past inspired Leganes goalkeeper Jon Ander Serantes.

The result means Leganes - playing in the top flight for the first time in their 88-year history - now have four points from their first two outings, twice as many points as stuttering Atletico.

The well-organised hosts limited last season's Champions League finalists to two opportunities in the first half, neither of which were taken.

The first fell to Kevin Gameiro in the 25th minute but the France international made a mess of the opening as he dragged his shot across the face of goal.

That was poor effort from the summer signing from Sevilla, but Atletico's next chance oozed quality from start to finish.

Gabi superbly picked out Antoine Griezmann's run into the area with a pinpoint diagonal pass over the Leganes full-back, and the Euro 2016 top-scorer looked to have opened the scoring with a brilliant first-time volley.

However, Serantes was equal to the effort as he flung himself to his left to make a fantastic one-handed save.

It was the first of several occasions when Serantes frustrated Atletico on the night.

The 26-year-old was called into action again in the second half to parry a shot from Gameiro after the pacy forward had burst between two home defenders.

Atletico continued to probe and Griezmann sliced a good opening wildly wide off his less-favoured right foot with 15 minutes to go, before substitute Yannick Carrasco saw his 82nd-minute effort well-blocked by Serantes at his near post.

The Rojiblancos' final chance fell to Fernando Torres in stoppage time but, almost inevitably, Serantes kept out the Spain international's header to earn a famous result for the Madrid minnows.
