TWEET: Champions League's Twitter users were insulted
Ahead of today's group stage draw in Monaco, the account sent a message with the gesture to its 12.3mfollowers following the final qualifying fixtures last night.
The tweet was accompanied with a message "if you're heading for the #UCL group stage…".
They also included a picture Borussia Monchengladbach's goalkeeper Yann Sommer with his index finger raised after thrashing Swiss side Young Boys 6-1.
TWEET: The offending message
But instead of sending the intended emoji of an index finger raised, they unintentionally flipped off their excited millions of followers.
Europe's premier club competition has now deleted the offending tweet, but not before fans noticed the mistake.
It seemed to have been a simple error, but it became the highlight of the night as fans reacted on the social media site.
One fan, @Dutchiad, said "wrong emoji lads".
Other fans sent middle fingers back to the Champions League's naughty tweet.
DRAW: Fans were settled down to enjoy the draw when the offending tweet was sent
JOKE: Most fans saw the funny side
A cheeky fan named Andrew Smith joked: "Apparently UEFA were rooting for Young Boys."
Thanks to the Twitterati, the tweet has now gone viral.
Most online commentators are hoping that whoever was in charge of the social networking site that night has not been fired.
