Schubert delighted with Champions League progression

VfL Borussia Monchengladbach head coach Andre Schubert was thrilled with their 6-1 demolition of Young Boys in the Champions League play-off second-leg on Wednesday.

The German side had defeated their Swiss opponents 3-1 in the first leg to record a 9-2 aggregate win and secure their place in the group stage of the competition.

Thorgan Hazard and Raffael both scored hat-tricks at Borussia Park with Schubert praising the performance of his whole team.

He told the club’s official website: “We’re thrilled to have won the game.

“We did so many things well today. Our positional play was good, we let the ball do the work and countered excellently.

“We can’t even complain about their goal really; it was a wonder goal that you can’t do a whole lot about.”

He added: “Raffael is a top quality player; he’s technically very talented and is fantastic physically. He’s a step ahead of his opponents upstairs as well, and you saw that today.”

Striker Lars Stindl has meanwhile revealed Monchengladbach has achieved their goal of reaching the tournament proper while defender Jannik Vestergaard was delighted to have made his debut for his new club after signing from Werder Bremen this season.

Stindl said: “Our goal was always to reach the group phase of the Champions League and we worked hard last year to be able to contest the play-offs.

“We got ourselves a good result in Bern and took the first step. We went all out today, were focused right from the off and scored our goals at the right time. It’s a fully deserved win over the two legs.

Vestergaard added: “It couldn’t have been better: a full stadium, a great atmosphere and a great win. Plus, we’ve managed to achieve our goal of qualifying for the Champions League group phase.

“It was nice for me personally to make my home debut in a competitive game like that. We played well today, kept focus and scored an early goal, which knocked Bern’s spirit a bit.”
