Celta Vigo 0 - 1 Leganes: Victor Diaz strike gives Leganes winning start in La Liga

Leganes announced themselves to LaLiga with a 1-0 win away to Celta Vigo.

Victor Diaz scored the historic goal as the newcomers won their first ever top-flight game.

Iago Aspas missed Celta's best chances as a lively game petered out in the second half.

Celta's Fabian Orellana let an early chance slip away but Leganes, promoted as second-tier runners-up last season, otherwise started well.

David Timor and Miguel Angel Guerrero threatened before Adrian Marin's snap-shot drew the first save from home keeper Sergio Alvarez.

Jon Ander Serantes had to tip over Aspas' dangerous cross at the other end before saving Orellana's weak volley and Pione Sisto's drive.

Orellana curled a shot wide after a flowing move and Aspas was wrongly flagged offside before clipping a neat finish over Serantes.

Hugo Mallo swung a good left-foot shot just wide for Celta while Alvarez made a vital save from Guerrero as the half ended goalless.

Aspas missed the target when through on goal at the start of the second period and blazed another effort wildly over - Leganes' Alberto then combined both failings after snatching at the ball when Daniel Wass was played into trouble.

But with 15 minutes remaining, a well-worked short corner routine saw Timor cross to the edge of the box, Gabriel Perez head powerfully to the far post and defender Diaz break the deadlock with a neat flick.

Celta substitute John Guidetti wasted a fine chance to equalise when he misjudged Orellana's cross and though Leganes should have killed it off when Unai Lopez's delightful through-ball was wasted by Darwin Machis' feeble finish, they held on to win.
