But the Evening Standard claim club president Florentino Perez would prefer to make a raid for Newcastle star Moussa Sissoko.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has made it clear he wants to keep Matic at Stamford Bridge but Zidane is ready to swoop after watching the Serbian in pre-season.

Real are desperate to sign one of the duo before their La Liga opener against Real Sociedad on August 21.

And both Sissoko and Matic are valued at £34m by the Champions League winners, although Newcastle are demanding £36m for the France international.

Real’s pursuit of the Blues midfield general could be made tougher after the 28-year-old said he was looking forward to working with Conte.

Speaking during the club’s US pre-season tour Matic said: “What he said gave me a special feeling.

"Like every player here, I have a good relationship with the manager. I respect what he said about me and, of course, I liked what I heard.

"It was a strange year for all of us last season. Of course, I was not happy that we finished 10th in the table but there were many things that made it hard for me, yet I can’t speak about it.

"So it was important for me to know that I am a big part of his [Conte’s] plans.

"I have been at the club for two-and-a-half years and have always given my best every day. Until I’m here, I will continue to give everything to the team.”

Chelsea kick-off their new Premier League campaign against West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Monday, August 15.
