Cristiano Ronaldo closes in on new Real Madrid contract

Despite being 31-years-old and with his current contract expiring in 2018, Cristiano Ronaldo's figurehead status is such that an extension has been mooted in the boardroom of the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu for some time, and it will be made official after the European Championship in France.
The initial extension will be for two years, meaning Cristiano will remain at Real Madrid until June 2020, although there is an option for another year on top of that.
The financial package will remain unchanged, the net salary of €21 million reinforcing him as the club's flagship player.
The commitment on both sides is absolute.
Question marks had been raised over the Portuguese winger's vision of a long term future with Los Blancos, but the doubts have dissipated over the last few months.
"If Madrid are intelligent, they'll give me a new contract" he said in a TV interview before the Champions League final in May.
Ronaldo's hint was not missed by the club, and preparations are already being made for Real Madrid's record goalscorer to sign his new contract in front of the media once Euro 2016 has finished.
The deal will take the club legend beyond the age of 35 and the end of his career at the highest level, begging the question: what comes next?"
[He will keep playing] until I'm 40, more or less," is the way Ronaldo puts it.
