The Danish international enjoyed an eight-year spell at Anfield, arriving from Brondby for £6m in 2006.
He went on to make 232 appearances at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, scoring 14 goals and winning the League Cup before returning to Brondby in 2014.
Agger confirmed the news of his retirement on Twitter yesterday morning.
"It's sad, but it is the right decision to stop. I'm proud of my career," he said, along with a picture of Denmark, Brondby, Liverpool and Rosenhoj - Agger’s childhood club - shirts.
And Steven Gerrard was quick to pay tribute to his former team-mate, taking to Instagram to post a picture of the pair.
"What a player this man was calm, composed and quality on the ball,” wrote the Liverpool legend.
"All the best with your future mate it was a pleasure to play in the same team as you."
Agger helped Liverpool reach the final of the Champions League in his debut season at Anfield.
The Reds went on to lose 2-1 to AC Milan in Athens.
