Fernando Torres reduced to tears after Champions League final loss

Fernando Torres was inconsolable at the San Siro tonight as Atletico Madrid missed out on their first ever European title to rivals Real Madrid, reduced to tears after the penalty shootout loss in Milan.

In what was a repeat of the 2014 final, Atletico lost out to their Madrid neighbours at the death. Diego Simeone’s side led 1-0 until the last minute two years ago before a Sergio Ramos header forced the tie into extra-time.

Los Colchoneros went on to capitulate to a 4-1 defeat and although they can hold their heads high after this evening’s performance, they were left to rue what might have been in Milan.

Ramos became the first defender to score in two separate Champions League finals to open the scoring early on and although Antoine Griezmann struck the crossbar from the penalty spot after Torres was fouled by Pepe, substitute Yannick Carrasco levelled proceedings in the second half.

But despite taking the upper hand and battling all the way to a penalty shootout, right-back Juanfran’s missed spot-kick presented Cristiano Ronaldo – the Champions League’s top scorer this season – win win Real’s 11th European Cup.

It reduced Torres, who described the match as the most special of his career in the lead up to the finale, to tears, with the former Liverpool striker dejected after the final whistle as Real lifted the trophy.

Torres failed to complete a single pass in the first half of the match but it was the Spaniard’s clever movement which drew the foul by Pepe, signalling a change of momentum despite Griezmann’s missed opportunity.

The former Champions League winner’s efforts ended in vain though and his tears capped off yet another heartbreaking European night for Atletico.
