LEGEND: Giggs has been at United since he was young

Old Trafford legend Giggs, 42, who holds the club’s appearance record, is now on holiday considering his future with the club he has been at since he was a young boy.

But the Daily Star Sunday has been told the United squad are desperate for him to remain involved in a key role with the first team.

Giggs was assistant manager under Louis van Gaal, who was sacked after last weekend’s FA Cup Final win over Crystal Palace – and many players hoped he would succeed the Dutchman.

The former Wales winger also wanted to take over from the sacked Van Gaal and believed he was in the running to do so, until the appointment of former Chelsea boss Mourinho was confirmed.

Giggs is highly respected by United’s players and while Mourinho is happy for him to stay, it could be in a more junior role.

Mourinho’s trusted lieutenant Rui Faria is lined up to be assistant manager.

But United’s players hope Mourinho will be happy to have two assistants, with Giggs retaining his first-team involvement.

If that doesn’t happen, Giggs could decide to end his long association with his only senior club and seek a manager’s position elsewhere.

There have been claims he could be a candidate for the Everton job.

United, meanwhile, are more confident that goalkeeper David De Gea will stay at the club following the arrival of Mourinho.

The feeling in the United dressing room was that De Gea would have quit for Real Madrid if Van Gaal had remained in charge.
